The obituary states that Kelly, the eldest daughter of Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, was born and raised in Los Angeles before her family made the move to Idaho. A Skidmore College graduate, she worked in New York City as an actress and appeared onstage as well in films such as* Trading Places *and television shows like *The Equalizer, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, *and* Judging Amy.*
It also highlighted Kelly’s philanthropic work, noting that she and her dad Tony helped raise funds to refurbish the Dohàny Street Synagogue in Budapest, Hungary. She also signed off all of her messages with “Isten Veled,” a Hungarian blessing that means “God is with you.”
Kelly and her second husband, filmmaker John Marsh, later relocated to Bellevue, Idaho, where they co-founded the independent documentary production company Liberty Films, per the obituary. The couple also worked together to renovate an old Victorian home, which was preserved and donated back to the community.
“She lived a life of generosity, service and a deep love of natural beauty and was dedicated to her family and Pokémon Go,” the obituary read. “She was affectionally known as 'Auntie Cookie' and is survived by her husband John, her sisters, Jamie, Alexandra, Allegra and their brother Benjamin as well as her nieces and nephews, Annie, Ruby, Elisabeth, Dido, Helena, Raphael, Nicholas, Jacob and Kristopher and grand nieces and nephews, Calum, Rory, Alistair and Isaac and her stepmother, Leslie Curtis.”
It concluded, “Isten Veled to our sister of the sun and the moon, Kelly. May her memory be a blessing.”
Curtis has taken to social media to pay tribute to her sister in the wake of her death, sharing a meaningful memory of how her wedding to husband Christopher Guest brought the pair back together after drifting apart.
“My sister and I were close as children but also had that sibling competition for divorced parent's attention and love and we were wildly different and lived apart for many years,” she wrote. “But she came back to be with me at my wedding and never really left again.”
Curtis explained that Kelly went on to become an "integral part" of her "family structure," adding, “I miss her today but am buoyed by the knowledge that she is at peace."
