According to a statement issued by Jared Leto’s representatives and given to media outlets on Wednesday, the actor has denied the allegations of sexual misconduct made by four women who at the time of the alleged encounters were teenagers.

The claims are contained in a BBC documentary entitled Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret, which was broadcast on Wednesday.

Ten women contacted the BBC regarding their experiences with Leto, who is 54, and stated that the incidents in question occurred between 2002 and 2016, during the time when he was in his thirties and forties.

Four of the women accused Leto of behaviour that would constitute criminal sexual offences.

For the documentary, nine out of the ten women who were interviewed were giving a public account of their experiences for the first time, while the BBC stated that the other six women it interviewed had described further instances of inappropriate behaviour which did not constitute alleged criminal conduct.

A woman, whose identity has been provided by the BBC under the name Isabel, stated that Leto sexually assaulted her in the bathroom of a motel in Las Vegas in 2002, at the time when she was seventeen.

Another woman said that Leto threatened to sexually assault her in a hotel room when she was nineteen, having been left alone with him.

A third woman claimed that she had sexual intercourse with Leto in California when she was seventeen, an act which is classified as statutory rape under state law.

A fourth woman, whose identity has been given by the BBC as Etta, stated that Leto made her several sexually explicit phone calls when she was sixteen.

She also said that Leto then asked her to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which she refused to do.

The BBC confirmed some of the claims by interviewing friends and family members who had been informed about the incidents at the time, as well as by referring to photographs, text messages and other documents.

Before the documentary was broadcast, Leto did not reply to the BBC’s requests for comment.

“As for sexually assaulting anyone, I have never done so in all the time I have lived,” Leto stated in the statement released following the broadcast. “The allegations are completely and unambiguously false.”

For years there have been accusations made against Leto regarding sexual misconduct, but he has denied all of them. No criminal charges have ever been brought against him.

In June Air Mail issued its own report in which nine women charged Leto with inappropriate behaviour, some of them having been teenagers, the incidents in question dating back to the mid-2000s; Leto’s representative at that time stated that the allegations were “expressly denied” and “demonstrably false”.

The accusations came after DJ Allie Teilz posted on Instagram in May, stating that Leto had tried to have sex with her backstage when she was seventeen.

In 2014 Leto was awarded the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club.

Among his other film appearances are Fight Club, Blade Runner 2049, Suicide Squad, House of Gucci and this year’s Tron: Ares; he also leads the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars.
