Norah O’Donnell Gets Bigger ’60 Minutes’ Role as CBS Unveils New Hires

Norah O’Donnell is about to begin a new chapter at CBS News with a major role at60 Minutes. The longtime journalist will now take on a full-time position as the newsmagazine enters a new era. The news comes as the company is going through leadership transitions and restructuring its newsroom. CBS News shared the update as it introduced several new correspondents for the program.
Norah O’Donnell takes on full-time 60 Minutes role
On July 29, Tuesday, Nick Bilton announced O’Donnell’s promotion during a staff meeting. O’Donnell was previously a contributing correspondent for 60 Minutes. She joined CBS News in 2011 and anchored CBS Evening News from 2019 until January 2025. “Norah is a powerhouse,” said Bilton of her work.
He added, “You’ve seen her all over the network. She’s launched a new podcast. And you’ll see much more of her in our halls because Norah will be a correspondent on 60 Minutes.” Bilton also announced several new correspondents and contributors joining the program.
They’re New York Times opinion columnist Ross Douthat, documentary filmmaker Sebastian Junger, former Vice News journalist Gianna Toboni and CBS News senior global affairs correspondent Trevor Phillips.
The new team knows how to connect with today’s audiences, Bilton said. He wrote, “Ross, Sebastian, Gianna and Trevor are entrepreneurial journalists who understand how to reach modern audiences.”

They have also authored books, magazine articles, documentaries, podcasts and created their own brands, he added. The new correspondents will partner with returning reporters Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim.
The staffing announcement follows months of internal changes at 60 Minutes. In June, Whitaker, Stahl and Wertheim said they considered leaving after executive producer Tanya Simon and executive editor Draggan Mihailovich exited the show.
They said they thought the two leaders were protecting the program’s independence and integrity. Even so, they decided to stay, writing, “We don’t want to see 60 Minutes die,” and pledged to help protect the show’s reputation.
